Spec glossary

Understanding oil specifications

The viscosity grades, specs and approvals that matter when choosing an oil — explained.

SAE viscosity grade (e.g. 5W-40)
The number before "W" is cold-flow (lower = better cold starts); the number after is high-temperature film strength (higher = thicker).
API (SP / SN)
American Petroleum Institute petrol-engine oil grades; later letters are newer, with SP the current top tier.
ACEA (A3/B4, C3)
European automaker specifications; the C series is Low-SAPS, compatible with DPF and other after-treatment systems.
JASO (MA2 / MB)
Japanese 4-stroke motorcycle oil specs; MA2 suits wet clutches (geared bikes), MB suits scooters.
ILSAC (GF-6)
A US/Japan fuel-economy petrol-oil specification emphasising economy and engine protection.
ISO VG
Industrial-oil viscosity grade (e.g. VG 46); the number is the kinematic viscosity at 40°C.
Low SAPS
Reduced sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur to protect diesel DPF/SCR after-treatment.
MB 229.x
Mercedes-Benz factory oil approvals (e.g. 229.3 / 229.5 / 229.51).
EURO 3–6
EU vehicle emission standards, mapping to heavy-duty diesel-oil formulation tiers.
OEM / ODM
OEM = made to the client's formula; ODM = the manufacturer provides the formula and design under the client's label.
